It's the Swimming Carnival (High School), everyone's participating in races and socialising on the side. At 3pm there's only a few people left. I'm standing with 2 of my friends and a teacher when a helicopter flies really low over the pool and circles overhead. Everyone is confused, one of my friends laughs and says 'Where's the secret agent they're here to pick up?' not realising she's just guessed my secret.
I sigh and run to the other side of the pool, vault up to the shed roof and up into the helicopter. I don't look back to see everyone speculate and point.
In the helicopter they give me some clothes to change into. Once we're over some paddocks/trees they open the door again and announce that this is my next assignment, I only just understand them through the helicopter noise. I jump and land on a grass covered path. I stand and find myself in a space exactly like the scene in Blue Velvet where the ear is found. I look around and see glass balls everywhere, they're of different sizes, scattered all through out the meadow. Some are clear, others cloudy from the inside and others are covered in dust or moss. The biggest one I see reaches up to my chin. They make me uneasy, because although they're stationary it seems like they could start rolling around at any time.
I bend down and pick up a glass ball the size of a marble from the grass. As I rise again I notice a guy on the other side of the clearing. I throw the marble to him, but he doesn't see, it hits him and he falls down.
Maybe I hurt him. I step forward with the sick gut feeling in my stomach telling me that he's dead.
I walk faster and almost walk past the guy, who is half buried. I kneel down and pull him out of the earth. His eyes are open wide but empty. There's moss and dirt on his white face, so it feels like I'm holding a marble statue. It's almost like he's been dead for so long he's turned to stone.
The tall grass around us blows in the wind and I'm reminded of the glass balls, again I'm gripped with fear. They seem to be waiting for something, a little push by the wind and then they can roll freely, causing distraction. It's nerve racking and I feel really uneasy sitting there next to the fallen statue of a forgotten man.
